Fall Movie Preview: 30 Days of Night
From the Eisner Award-nominated pulp graphic novels by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith, 30 Days of Night tells the story of a small Alaskan town who not only have month-long periods of night (common the farther North you get), but seem to have a grave problem with the undead. Vampires are old standbys in Hollywood stretching back to Dracula and Bela Lugosi days, but more recent films have tried to outdo each other in terms of style. With modern special effects (and hopefully decent scripting and acting), director David Slade and producer Sam Raimi(Spiderman, The Grudge) have put together a hold-over horror flick that should excite comic fans, and fans of heartthrob Josh Hartnett. Slade is responsible for the 2005 drama Hard Candy, an ingenious exploration of pedophilia - so he should bring a hard edge to this considerably more mainstream offering.
