After seven years of development, three different directors, name changes and several re-castings (including Don Cheadle in the title role for a spell), this movie went through almost as much trouble as Nicole Kidman vehicle The Invasion, out in mid-August. From all the buzz, this was a movie that needed to be made. Based on a Mark Jacobsen article in New York Magazine, the Lucas/Roberts story had several shades of gray and didn't play to the stereotypes of cops vs. drug dealers that's been played out in many Hollywood thrillers through the years - a good reason why the movie made it through all its production troubles.
