Our Review of The Devil Wears Prada
With the popularity of Cinderella stories and shows like Ugly Betty, it’s no wonder that Lauren Weisberger’s novel The Devil Wears Prada was made into a movie. Featuring Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci and Adrian Grenier, The Devil Wears Prada is a fun movie for guys and girls and features great performances by some familiar faces.
In a town full of fashionable people, Andy Sachs stands out. Not because she looks good, but because she doesn’t have a clue. A recent college graduate, Andy is looking to make her way in the publishing world. Unfortunately for her, she gets hired by the world’s most influential and read fashion magazine and has to battle hordes of nasty and beautiful people to make her way to the top.
Sachs starts working at Runway, a magazine run by the frightening and powerful Miranda Priestly. Priestly has little patience for mistakes and less patience for the unfashionable Andy. A style icon and feared fashion mag impresario, Priestly makes it hard for the shabby Andy to fit in and find her place.
As Andy works tirelessly for the demanding Miranda, her personal life and ethics start to unravel. Andy has to sacrifice her boyfriend, family and friendships in the name of “fashion” so she can climb the corporate ladder.
When Andy begins to stand out as a reliable and more fashionable assistant (after her movie makeover), Miranda begins to heap bigger responsibilities on her, which ultimately lead to greater perks and new and interesting people. As Andy’s relationship with her boyfriend (played by Grenier) starts to fall apart, a glamorous book publisher begins to woo her and Andy starts to forget who she really is inside.
The culmination of the film happens when Andy takes a trip to Paris for Fashion Week with Miranda. The fast-paced and decadent world of the fashion industry is tempting, but Andy finally has to decide if the cost of success is really worth all the trouble.

Although the story is funny and entertaining, it also holds a deeper message regarding self-preservation and not selling out. Throughout the film, Andy is forced to decide between Miranda and her personal life. It isn’t until the end that Andy finally begins to realize the consequences she faces from her struggle to gain fame and renown in the fashion world.
The Devil Wears Prada is a good pick for any night of the week. It has a universal theme that makes it relatable, and it’s highly entertaining, a combination that makes it a winner all around.
